Increasing cascade of startups & home office are major factors driving the US office furniture market. In US, demand of home offices is taking a dig due to the concept of work-from-home and therefore increasing the sales of desktop workspace and chairs. The demand is driven by increasing rise in office spaces such as which in turn derives the development of an economy which helps derive the demand for requirement of office furniture.
The office furniture market is facing competition from local players whose furniture is cost effective for the customers and provides better facilities during the customization of office furniture as well as after sales service which is difficult on the online platforms. In addition, rising import penetration and volatile input costs have further hampered industry revenue and hurt profitability. Volatile input costs, rising pressures from cheap Chinese imports and lower sales volume of goods have caused the industry's profitability to fall. In particular, lower sales volumes of goods have led to under-absorption of fixed costs such as labor and utility expenses, further squeezing margins that high input costs already hampered
Emergence of online furniture stores is the basic trend which is seen these days in the United States
Increasing adoption of convertible workstations
Evolution of multi-functional furniture
Rising customization of office furniture
Rising trend is the manufacturer of ergonomic chairs which maintain the correct postures while working for longer hours. Such innovations are changing the furniture market by making the furniture more adaptable to person to person because of customization available to the consumers.
An expanding US economy and increased focus on work space aesthetics have fueled the demand for luxury furniture across the United States. A new trend in the office furniture market is the convertible workstations being offered by the manufacturers. Many companies prefer a standing desk solution that can be used as a table top and can also be converted to regular sitting workstations as per requirement. Many companies are owing to standing meetings instead of seated ones owing to risks posed to one’s health due to prolonged sitting. This new trend of standing meetings and conferences will have a positive impact on the growth during the forecasted period.
Human scale abides by the philosophy that less is more. Its designs are simple, honest and functional. Furthermore, it puts human health first. Its articulating keyboard systems, which place the keyboard close to the worker’s body at a carefully sloped angle, are the best in the industry. The Freedom Chair offers weight-sensitive reclining and adjustable air and headrests, and has even been included on the sets of several Hollywood movies and TV shows. Demand for modular systems also known as office systems , representing 2.3 % annual growth from 2017-2030. Vigorous growth in commercial and office building construction and remodeling activities is bound to grow demand as companies furnish new office spaces. While replacement played a minor role in supporting demand largely resulting of product durability and lack of innovation- workspace design will drive an increase in replacements.
On the basis of products, there is the high demand for the office chairs having the market share of 14% in 2017 which includes swivel chairs, stacking chairs, ergonomic chairs and benches due to the necessity of the comfortable working conditions. In the distribution channel segment, the use of online platforms is increasing gradually and shifting form offline platforms for the distribution of the office furniture in order to cater the larger segment of the customers worldwide.

The online furniture and home ware sales will see an average yearly growth of 10% worldwide. This means that the growth driven by ecommerce outperforms the overall market growth nearly three times. While the digital buyer penetration is expected to hit 11.5% in 2020, it is projected to reach nearly 18% over the next couple of years. Changing buying habits are mostly at fault here as online and mobile shopping has become millennial’ second nature. Product content such as high quality imagery and social proof in the form of customer reviews now serve as enough touch points for the consumer to make their purchase decision. Indeed, the majority of consumers still say they prefer to shop for their furniture in stores, but the opposite trend is quickly turning the tide. It has been noticed by large retailers such as the Swedish giant IKEA or the American marketplace Way fair, who have been investing heavily into their online presence and are securing ever larger market share in household ecommerce.
Over the five years to 2019, the Online Office Furniture Sales industry's revenue is expected to grow at an annualized rate of 10.0% to $12.4 billion. Much of this growth has been due to the increasing prevalence of e-commerce in general, as well as business owners growing more accepting of buying large items, such as furniture, online. Ordering office furniture online makes it easier for businesses to view a wide selection of products, compare prices and arrange convenient delivery. Moreover, traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, such as industry operators Office Depot Inc. and Staples Inc., have increasingly expanded their online presence and relied on e-commerce to grow their businesses.
