Incontinence refers to the loss of control or moderation of one’s defecation process. It involves loss of bladder control and/or bowel movement control. Both faecal and urinary incontinences vary in severity and duration. Severity may range from occasional leaks due to physical stress, to a total loss of control causing constant leakage.
In terms of duration, incontinence can be transient or permanent. Transient in-continence may be caused due to temporary problems like urinary tract infection or vaginal infection, constipation, diarrhea or hemorrhoids. Permanent in-continence may be a result of age, chronic diseases or dementia. Very high amounts of body fat, smoking, high impact sports, prostatic hyperplasia, trauma, surgery or radiation to the pelvis are some of the other causes of incontinence.
Urinary incontinence can be bifurcated into various types, including stress, urge, overflow and functional in-continence. In-continence is more common among women than in men, due to shorter urethra and complications related to childbirth, menopause etc. Incontinence poses as a very embarrassing and problematic condition, restraining the patient’s social life and causing confidence issues. Treatments for incontinence include behavioral therapy, exercises, medication or drugs, medical devices and products, and surgery.
The market of incontinence products and devices has witnessed positive growth in recent years due to rising geriatric population and rising incidences of chronic diseases worldwide.
Geographically, North America and Europe are the highest revenue generating regions for incontinence products market. This can be attributed to wide awareness and acceptance of these products in these regions, complimented by the ability to purchase them due to high disposable income of the population. However, Asia Pacific region is expected to witness lucrative growth in demand for incontinence products during the forecast period, owing to large consumer base and concentration of the projected increase in geriatric population in the region. Rising awareness towards health and hygiene, as well as healthcare expenditure in the region will further propel the demand for incontinence products.
The projected rise in the global geriatric population, rising awareness about incontinence and rising acceptance of these products are some of the key factors driving the demand for incontinence products globally. As per the United Nations, the number of people in the world aged 60 years or over is projected to grow by 56 percent between 2017 and 2030 and by 2050, the global population of older persons is projected to more than double its size in 2017, reaching nearly 2.1 billion. Since incontinence incidence is much higher amongst the elderly, this is expected to boost the demand for incontinence products in the coming years. Rising incidences of chronic illnesses worldwide and increasing obesity levels are other major factors contributing significantly to demand. As per WHO, the global obesity levels have more than doubled in the past 34 years.
However, availability of low cost alternatives by local manufacturers acts as a major threat to the global incontinence products market. Alternative treatments like surgery and therapy also hinder market growth of incontinence products. Low reimbursement and environmental impact of disposable products further creates pressure on the incontinence products manufacturers to introduce environment friendly disposable products.
