Global 5G Network Equipment Market

5G has started to hit the mainstream this year, with more than 20 wireless network operators have launched 5G across 300 locations around the world. 5G is expected to roll out globally more quickly as compared to the previous generations of wireless technology, due to a number of factors such as, new spectrum of bands across a number of global markets, generally depressed financial situation of operators and operators yearning for new revenue opportunities. 5G is rapidly becoming a reality across the world, judging from the progress some operators and equipments are making. Therefore, new 5G network access equipment must deliver broader bandwidths, high frequencies, lower latencies, and enable machine to machine communication, which is necessary for a massively connected Internet of Things (IoT). A total of 48 5G devices announced from 26 different vendors, covering eight form factors: phones, indoor modems, outdoor modems, modules, Snap-on dongles/adaptors, IoT routers and USB terminals. There are also four different 5G chipset vendors: Huawei, Mediatek, Qualcomm and Samsung, Intel recently dropped out of the market. However, many of the devices announced have not been released yet, only commercial available 5G devices include:

  • Huawei 5G CPE 2.0 (mm Wave)
  • Huawei 5G CPE 2.0 (Sub-6 GHz)
  • Huawei 5G CPE Win
  • Motorola 5G Moto Mod
  • Netgear Nighthawk M5 Fusion MR5000 (aka Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot)
  • Nokia Fastmile 5G Gateway
  • Samsung SFG-D0100
  • Samsung Galaxy S10 5G (Europe and Asia)

The number of 5G customers globally will pass the 1 billion market in 2023 and this figure will represent just over 15% of all mobile broadband customers. However, today’s 5G network essentially stand as a faster version of 4G, and advanced features like mobile edge computing and network slicing are not yet available in most of the locations.

Use of 5G in Connected Services

  • Enhanced mobile broadband
  • Mission-critical communications
  • Massive IoT

Following testing against the most realistic 5G conditions should be done by the operators before bringing new 5G network equipment to market:

  • Generate and analyze 5G new radio (NR) waveforms
  • Accelerate 5G NR conformance tests
  • Volume Test 5G NR infrastructure equipment
  • Validate multi-channel GNB performance
  • Emulate real-world radio channel conditions
  • Characterize the 5G NR air interface
  • Verify 5G network coverage and quality in the field
  • Generate massive amount of 5G traffic
  • Manufacturer of multi-antenna wireless products achieves 20X speed improvements

Release of 5G baseband and RF systems: First step before commercial equipment devices

When a new radio technology is released, basebands are developed and implemented in relatively simple devices such as mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, before more complex devices such as smartphones, where integration is always more challenging. Fixed Wireless Access was one of the first use cases, rather than mobile usage and first commercial devices announced have been 5G home routers, such as the one announced by Huawei at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, or the one by Samsung. Those early devices have been more specifically designed for carrier partners Verizon in the US and in South Korea, and have already received their approval by the FCC. But since those early 5G devices designed for fixed usage, the first mobile 5G networks have been launched in the world and the devices ecosystem, due to the widening of enabling basebands. As of mid-December 2019, 199 5G devices announced by 76 different vendors and 15 different categories of form factors, some of which are fairly similar.

Overview of Global 5G Network Equipment Market

5G network’s complete economic effect will likely be realized across the globe at least by 2030, with supporting a wide range of industries and potentially enabling up to USD 13.3 trillion worth of goods and services and will also contribute around USD 2 trillion dollars in GDP growth by the end of the same period. The 5G value chain, including OEMs, operators, content creators, app developers, and consumers, could alone support up to 22.3 million jobs, or more than one job for every person in Beijing, China. The average consumer is expected to go from being able to consume 2.3 GB of data per month today to close to 11 GB of data per month on their smartphone in 2022, driven by the explosive growth in video traffic as mobile is increasingly becoming the source of media and entertainment, as well as the massive growth in always-connected cloud computing and experiences. In 2018, the global 5G network infrastructure industry reached approximately USD 0.5 billion. North America dominated the industry with a share of 50% in 2019.

According to the Goldstein Market Intelligence Analyst, Global 5G Network Equipment Industry was valued around USD 1.7 billion in 2019 and it is projected to grow at a compound annual growth (CAGR) of 9% from 2020 to 2030.

Raised Concerns: 5G Equipment Comes from Just a Few Suppliers

Equipments at a heart of 5G networks currently comes from just a few global suppliers, and largest one right now being the Chinese company, Huawei. This has raised concerns given that Chinese law requires all companies subject to its jurisdiction to comply with request from the country’s intelligence. However, the US has already banned Huawei, and will issue show because notice to other Chinese state owned companies which it believes have received requests from China’s intelligence services to share data. The tide is also turning away from Huawei, towards trusted 5G vendors, as the world’s leading telecom companies such as, Telefonica, Orange, Jio, Telstra and many more are becoming “Clean Telcos”. As these companies are rejecting doing business with tools of the CCP surveillance state, like Huawei.

Jio Reveals self-developed 5G network equipment

Reliance Jio has reportedly developed 4G and 5G network equipment in-house as the company looks out to cut costs and become less dependent on imports. Jio has created fully automated cloud-native end-to-end 5G technology and also company intends to produce this equipment domestically once it has concluded its 5G trials, and has now applied to the Department of Telecommunications to begin this process. However, the company’s parent firm Reliance Industries has been laying the groundwork for the operator to become more self-sufficient with regard to 5G, merging it with 4G developer Rancore Technologies in 2017, also the parent company acquired the software firm Radisys in 2018.
