Release of 5G baseband and RF systems: First step before commercial equipment devices

When a new radio technology is released, basebands are developed and implemented in relatively simple devices such as mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, before more complex devices such as smartphones, where integration is always more challenging. Fixed Wireless Access was one of the first use cases, rather than mobile usage and first commercial devices announced have been 5G home routers, such as the one announced by Huawei at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, or the one by Samsung. Raised Concerns: 5G Equipment Comes from Just a Few Suppliers

Equipments at a heart of 5G networks currently comes from just a few global suppliers, and largest one right now being the Chinese company, Huawei. This has raised concerns given that Chinese law requires all companies subject to its jurisdiction to comply with request from the country’s intelligence. Jio Reveals self-developed 5G network equipment

Reliance Jio has reportedly developed 4G and 5G network equipment in-house as the company looks out to cut costs and become less dependent on imports. Jio has created fully automated cloud-native end-to-end 5G technology and also company intends to produce this equipment domestically once it has concluded its 5G trials, and has now applied to the Department of Telecommunications to begin this process. However, the company’s parent firm Reliance Industries has been laying the groundwork for the operator to become more self-sufficient with regard to 5G, merging it with 4G developer Rancore Technologies in 2017, also the parent company acquired the software firm Radisys in 2018.
